The over-development of breasts in men, known as gynecomastia, affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of males. Men with larger or sagging breasts can feel self-conscious about their breast size and restrict themselves from activities they love. Suffolk Plastic Surgeons, P.C. can decrease the size of a man’s breasts, helping restore confidence and feel more comfortable every day.
What is the Cause of Gynecomastia?
Many studies have been conducted to better understand gynecomastia, and several factors have been discovered, including a hormonal imbalance and the use of certain medications. When a male holds too much estrogen, it’s possible for his breast tissue to over-grow. This abundance of estrogen, known as estrogen dominance, diminishes the amount of testosterone that is available in the body.
Hormonal changes can occur during any time of life and for many reasons. Newborn boys carry some of Mom’s estrogen and may have swollen breasts. As levels stabilize, swelling reduces. Hormones strike once again for teenage boys who may experience a temporary swelling of the breasts. This also should reduce with maturation. A decline of testosterone in adulthood can cause estrogen levels to rise.
What Treatment is Available for Gynecomastia?
There is no real way to prevent gynecomastia in men and one can never predict if the swollen breast tissue will reduce on its own. If your breasts are consistently swollen, you may benefit from an appointment with Suffolk Plastic Surgeons, P.C.! We typically perform male breast reduction surgery under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The surgery takes one to three hours on average. Several techniques can be used to perform male breast reduction, depending on the severity of the swelling.
If the primary cause of the enlarged breasts is excessive fatty tissue, liposuction may be performed through tiny incisions to remove that excess fat. In other instances when larger amounts of glandular tissue or fat need to be removed, excess skin may need to be also removed. We close the incisions using sutures and the chest may be wrapped to keep your skin firmly in place after the procedure.
We will encourage you to walk around on the day of your breast reduction surgery and you typically can be expected to return to work after one week. You should avoid vigorous activities for around three to four weeks after the procedure.
Who is a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
Any man who feels uncomfortable with his larger breast size is a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery. Men of all ages can have this procedure performed, as long as they are in good health, both physically and emotionally. Having firm, elastic skin helps to reshape to new body contours.
You are not alone. Gynecomastia is a very common problem! Without help, many men struggle with the swelling of breast tissue throughout adulthood and that’s why it’s important to speak about it.
